Maybe you’ve been reading land property advertisements where prices like “Eko  Atlantic land been sold for 1.5 billion nairas per square meter” are quoted and you can’t help but wonder how large a plot of land is in square meters. Or are you thinking of purchasing land and you don’t know the difference between the land measurement?

Land Sizes and Measurement in Nigeria?

There are certain points to consider before buying a property in Nigeria. You must understand the land measurement in Nigeria, most importantly if you are interested in buying that particular land or house.

Even though the measuring figure varies across all the states in Nigeria, they all have the same measurement unit. In this article, I will highlight different land measurements used in Nigeria.

– Plots

A plot is a substantial piece of land measurement for farming or building. The word ‘plot’ is a random term used to describe a land division carved out for property development. Also, the land size can be measured using different units such as acres, hectares, square feet, or square meters.

– Feet (ft)

A foot, plural feet, is a unit of length in the imperial customary systems of measurement. One foot (1ft), in measurement, is defined as 0.3048m exactly or 12 inches. One square (1 sq ft) comprises 0.09sq.m

– Square feet

The square foot, plural square feet, is an imperial area unit. One square foot is defined as the area of a square with sides that measures 1 foot in length.

– Meter (m)

A meter is the base unit of length used in the metric system and can easily be converted for other teams. One meter is equivalent to 100 centimeters, 39.37 inches, or 3.3ft.

– Square meters (Sqm)

The square meter is a fundamental metric unit area. A square meter is simply the area of a square whose sides measure exactly 1 meter in length.


A land measurement unit of area; is a product of any rectangular plot of land, giving 4046.86sqm or 43.560sqft. An acre consists of 6 units, each measuring 60 x 120ft

– Hectare

Hectare is a unit of measurement used for tracts of land; or farmland. A hectare of land measures about 100m x 100m or 328 feet or 10,000 square meters. A hectare of land is about two and a half acres, usually about 16 plots.

It is one of the known metric units for measuring land, and potential buyers and vendors often are at loggerheads on what the unit should be
